Want a secret to increasing productivity and enjoyment? Make a productivity list! Here’s how in three easy steps:
1. Make 2 Lists:
a. A master list of everything you need to do (stored in a word document on my computer) and;
b. A daily list of the most urgent things.
Success happens one day at a time. Here’s how to optimize your daily list:
a. Write tasks down in order of importance. Be specific. Sending an email is not nearly as good as “Email John about Camping Trip”
b. Next to each task delegate a time allotted for each activity. A good rule of thumb is estimate the time needed, and then double it. Not only will you properly budget for the activity, but also you’ll be able to relax and enjoy it!
c. Tip: Make sure you do this the night before so when you wake up you’re not left guessing. Something I like to do is add a few extra things under a different “optional” category in case I finish early. By categorizing them separately it’s not a failure if you don’t get to it and the pressure is taken off.
2. Start Easy:
Be sure that the first thing on your list is easy to do. The easier the better: send an email, take out the trash, or even taking a shower.
Sometimes I write things down just to cross them off, simply because it gets me going! Make it a game. Once the ball is rolling, you won’t want to leave that last thing unchecked!
Tip: If you’re working on a computer maximize the window so you don’t get distracted.
3. Give Yourself A Reward:
Checked all the boxes? You deserve something! Make the reward worth the struggle. That secret food indulgence, or hour of TV you can’t miss. Not only will it keep you motivated throughout the day, but you’ll feel like you’ve earned that free time. And you’ll enjoy it that much more!
Here’s a sample of my list for today. You can see the activity and in parenthesis next to it the time allotted.
How do you stay productive? What’s your favorite way to get through the day? I’d love to hear some more ideas so share yours below in a comment.
